A Better Way to Ice an Injury, Here is the Recipe

Use and toss: costly to you and the environment.

I am all about prevention here at Fit2Finish, but I know there are bumps and bruises going on out there. We’ve all tried the leaky bags and the expensive store bought “chemical” concoctions and peeling the dixie cups and digging out the frozen peas. I am going these one better – cheap, no leaking, conforms to body part, and stays colder longer. Secret ingredient: rubbing alcohol.

Here is the recipe courtesy of John Sveen, sports physical therapist and trainer:

  1. Mix 3 cups of water and 1 cup rubbing alcohol in a one-gallon zippered plastic bag.
  2. Shake the liquids together, release excess air, and zip the bag shut. Double bag to prevent leakage, and put it in the freezer for 2-3 hours until it reaches a slushy consistency.
  3. Place a towel or washcloth between skin and ice pack to protect skin. Leave it on the recommended period of time (usually 15-20 minutes) and put it back in the freezer. It will be ready to go again in about 2 hours.

Give it a try and tell me how you like it. Better yet – hope you don’t need one!!
